What Is F/D Spinal Decompression?
F/D Non-surgical Spinal Decompression is a non-surgical technique which "decompresses" or takes pressure off the spine. It is a way to gently and comfortably stretch the spine lengthwise, in a precise manner, at the level of the injured disc or joint. When the spine is gently stretched lengthwise, there is more room for the delicate nerves to traverse without being pinched upon and a great deal of pressure is taken off the involved disc or joint. The gentle stretch also allows room for injured discs to return to their normal positions. Over time the spinal tissues can elongate to this stretched position, often giving permanent pain and symptom relief.
How Does F/D Spinal Decompression Work?
The patient lies comfortably on his/her stomach on the nicely padded decompression table. For low back conditions, a padded support is put around the lower legs of the patient. While the doctor stabilizes the low back with his/her hand, the table gently tractions lengthwise putting a soft, relieving stretch on the spine. The doctor then places his/her hand over the specific vertebral or disc level in the back, and smoothly moves the lower half of the table, up, down, or side to side so the specific disc or joint that is the root cause of the pain and symptoms is targeted. This action is repeated several times during the course of a treatment session.
Before or after the decompression treatment, heat or cold is generally applied to the area to aid in the healing process. Patient's generally describe the treatmments as gentle, painless, intermittent stretching of the back. It can feel so good when pressure is relieved from the disc or joint that patients can actually fall asleep during the treatments.
Typically, patients undergo a series of 20-25 treatment sessions depending on the severity of the condition. It is important to note that many patients get substantial, immediate relief after just a few treatments, and some after just one.
